Networking
This is not your usual SQL Server User Group event. At SQL Social our aim is to give YOU the opportunity to meet with MVPs, well-known speakers, experienced professionals & industry experts and ask them about the data-related topics that matter to you. It is an opportunity to meet new people, make new friendships and find out what is going on in the data industry in Melbourne.
Speaking
As we have mentioned at previous events, we want to encourage you to take your first steps as a new speaker. As an incentive, every speaker will receive a free 1 month PluralSight subscription as a thank you. We only need a short 10 minute or so session on any SQL Server related topic – from an interesting query technique to an overview of the functionality of a component. Contact us if you’d like to have a go.
This Month’s Speaker and Topic
Kristina Rumpff (Microsoft) – Azure Data Platform Services Roadmap
Kristina has been in IT for (shh don’t tell) 20 years. She started out working as a Web Developer and actually created Gary Lyons Website! From there she has worked as a Unix Administrator, Progress DBA, Oracle DBA, BizTalk Admin, Perl Scripter, and finally a SQL DBA. Kristina is currently working in the Customer Advisory Team (AzureCAT) at Microsoft.
Azure is a constantly changing platform.
With Ignite in the USA is currently in progress, there have been a huge number of announcements. There is so much happening it’s really hard to keep on top of what is happening and when.
In this session, Kristina will take 15 mins to go through Microsoft’s Azure Roadmap document and share what’s on it for all the Azure Data Platform services.

This Month’s Speaker and Topic
Jon Searle – Using SQL in Azure Notebooks
Jon has been in the data business for yonks. He is a strong lateral thinker, with solid data modelling skills. He has delivered projects in statistical databases, data warehousing, BI, and data analytics, across many industries.
Jon hones his skills in data modelling, engineering, analysis, and visualisation to solve complex technical challenges and represent data in such a way to promote clear understanding and effective decision making. He is particularly adept at designing solutions that serve immediate tactical needs while remaining aligned with the strategic vision.
Azure Notebooks is a free service for anyone to develop and run code in their browser using Jupyter. The Jupyter Notebook is an open-source web application that allows you to create and share documents that contain live code, equations, visualizations and narrative text.
Notebooks provide a mechanism for communicating data finding, ideas and stories. It offers a public forum for presenting data analytics for education, communication, promenading, and other forms of data perambulating and consequently is fast becoming the data-geek slide-deck tool of choice.
In this session, Jon will give a basic show and tell about using SQL in Azure Notebooks. This will assume you don’t know what a notebook is, but perhaps you have used SQL before. It will not cover aspects of machine learning, data science, or other newfangled flashy things.
