SQL Social No 22 – 7 May 2014
We hope you all had the chance to get along to the recent SQL Saturday event and enjoyed a great day of free learning and networking with other SQL heads.
For those of you who were at the last SQL Social event, you would have heard us mention that we wanted to use SQL Social’s lightning talk style presentations as a development environment for new speakers or those just wanting to build-up to a full-blown User Group or Conference session. Well, this month we will have a new speaker on the block doing just that. Remember, as a reward we have 1 month Pluralsight subscriptions to give away to the presenter.

SQL Social No. 20 – Myths, Misconceptions and Must-See Conferences
Another very successful night for SQL Social with 29 people getting together at the Royal Melbourne Hotel. Chris Benson’s talk on Agile Data Warehouse project Myths & misconceptions sparked some lively debate and Martin Cairney’s review of PASS Summit 2013 looks to have planted the seed for a number of people to see how they can get to next year’s Summit Conference. A big thank you to our two speakers this evening, who managed to draw the crowds despite the inclement weather!
As promised, the slide deck to go with Martin’s talk is included here: PASS Summit 2013
We’ve also added a poll question about PASS – it would be interesting to see how many members there are here and how many more have signed up to find out more about PASS Summit.
And for those of you not yet signed up for PASS (the Professional Association for SQL Server), then you can do so here. And let’s not forget our local SQL Server User Group while we are at it.
It was pleasure to welcome C3 Business Solutions to the SQL Social fold this month . We are always very grateful for the support of our sponsors and look forward to lasting relationships.

SQL Social No.18 – In the bag
What a fantastic evening!
By my reckoning SQL Social No. 18 has to be the best social event that we have hosted this year. With a +80% turnout, an excellent speaker and attendees that were engaged and willing to get deep into discussion, this event ranks highly on my list.
What made this event work? Well, for me, there are a number of factors that I believe contributed to the success of the event:
- The weather played ball (it was warm and dry!)
- We have a core attendance established through our (ever growing) contact list
- A great speaker with an interesting topic
- Attendees that are engaged and willing to participate
- Sponsors to make it all happen

Thanks must also go to our speaker, Tara Shanka Jana, a Microsoft Premier Field Engineer who presented on the topic of Extreme Transaction Processing (XTP). Tara’s presentation generated a number of good questions and subsequent discussion, keeping the focus for nearly an hour. It was great to see the attendees really engaged and learning a thing or two about Hekaton.

I had a lot of good feedback at the end of the evening, with some attendees commenting that this has been the best SQL Social yet. These are the things that I like to hear!
Our next event is penciled in for Wednesday, October 9th. So keep your calendars clear and keep an eye out for invites and registration in a couple of weeks time.
