SQL Social No 22 – 7 May 2014
We hope you all had the chance to get along to the recent SQL Saturday event and enjoyed a great day of free learning and networking with other SQL heads.
For those of you who were at the last SQL Social event, you would have heard us mention that we wanted to use SQL Social’s lightning talk style presentations as a development environment for new speakers or those just wanting to build-up to a full-blown User Group or Conference session. Well, this month we will have a new speaker on the block doing just that. Remember, as a reward we have 1 month Pluralsight subscriptions to give away to the presenter.
This Month’s Speaker
Lucas Ferguson
Lucas is an Analyst Programmer with the global property management organisation, Knight Frank. He has 8 years of experience in the SQL Server stack, mostly with T-SQL and Reporting Services with a smattering of SSIS and SSAS.
Lucas will be presenting on how Knight Frank made use of SQL Server Service Broker to keep two databases with very different data structures in sync.
As usual, food and drinks are provided courtesy of our sponsors.
Registrations are open, so please use the link below to let us know that you will be attending

SQL Social No. 21 – The MVP Edition
The next SQL Social event is this week, Wednesday 11th December in fact. As usual we will be at the Governor’s Lounge at the Royal Melbourne Hotel, 629 Bourke Street, Melbourne.
This month we are spoiled by having 2 SQL Server MVP’s (one from our generous sponsors) giving us a few words of wisdom from their experiences.
This Month’s Speakers
Peter Myers
Peter Myers has worked with Microsoft database and development products since 1997. Today, he specializes in all Microsoft BI products and provides mentoring, technical training, and training course content authoring for SQL Server, Office, and SharePoint.
Peter has a broad business background supported by a bachelor’s degree in applied economics and accounting, and he extends this with solid experience backed by current MCSE and MCT certifications. He has been an MVP since 2007.
Peter will be presenting on Power BI, and specifically Excel’s Power Query. This talk will include some demos.
Rob Farley
Rob Farley is the Owner and Principal Consultant of LobsterPot Solutions Pty Ltd. He has been consulting in database technologies since completing a Computer Science degree with first class honours in 1997. He is a regular conference presenter both around Australia and overseas, heads up the Adelaide SQL Server User Group and holds several Microsoft certifications including Microsoft Certified Master in SQL Server. He is a Microsoft Certified Trainer, a recipient of the Microsoft MVP Award for SQL Server every year since 2006, and a past Branch Executive Committee member of the Australian Computer Society. Rob is director of the PASS organisation, and is a published author, his books including Professional SQL Server 2012 Internals and Troubleshooting, SQL Server MVP Deep Dives and SQL Server MVP Deep Dives 2.
Rob will provide some tips on query parameters – passing parameters into queries, functions and stored procedures is a thing we all do, but if you’re not careful about the data types, you could find performance becoming a problem, even if you’re just getting the length of a string wrong. This quick tip will give you ammo to take back to your developers to make sure they code it right the first time.
As usual, food and drinks are provided courtesy of our sponsors.

SQL Social No. 20 – Myths, Misconceptions and Must-See Conferences
Another very successful night for SQL Social with 29 people getting together at the Royal Melbourne Hotel. Chris Benson’s talk on Agile Data Warehouse project Myths & misconceptions sparked some lively debate and Martin Cairney’s review of PASS Summit 2013 looks to have planted the seed for a number of people to see how they can get to next year’s Summit Conference. A big thank you to our two speakers this evening, who managed to draw the crowds despite the inclement weather!
As promised, the slide deck to go with Martin’s talk is included here: PASS Summit 2013
We’ve also added a poll question about PASS – it would be interesting to see how many members there are here and how many more have signed up to find out more about PASS Summit.
And for those of you not yet signed up for PASS (the Professional Association for SQL Server), then you can do so here. And let’s not forget our local SQL Server User Group while we are at it.
It was pleasure to welcome C3 Business Solutions to the SQL Social fold this month . We are always very grateful for the support of our sponsors and look forward to lasting relationships.

SQL Server Social 2012
Happy New Year everyone!!
2012 is here and it promises to be a big year for the SQL Server community – yes, that’s right, SQL Server Social is back and ready for its first full year of events.
Our normal slot for this month unfortunately clashes with Australia Day so we have decided to push it back by 1 week and it will now be held on Wednesday, 1st February. I think we’re still going to count this as a January event so keep an eye out for further announcements.
This month we are also trialling a new venue, the Bull and Bear at 347 Flinders Lane, Melbourne. The downstairs Tavern Bar is ours for the evening and is equipped with 2 pool tables (which will be on free-play for most of the evening), a pinball machine, darts and a guest appearance of a Wii console!
We’ll be there from around 5:30pm right through until 10pm (or later if you feel like it).
As usual the generous sponsorship of BizData and LobsterPot will be providing for some food and drinks specials.
Look out for the invitation via Eventbrite hitting your in-boxes in the next couple of days and we’ll see you there.
Martin
